History

1993

Fourth Generation cars intruduced: Camaro and Firebird Coupe, Z28, Formula and Trans Am. Z28 selected as Indy 500 Pace Car, and came with special black/white paint and decals, all were automatics (though rumors of one 6-speed car, built for a GM exec, still persist). Two engines were available: The L32 3.4 V6 in the Coupes, and the LT1 5.7 V8 in the Z28, Formula and Trans Am, rated at 275 hp.

The Camaro Coupe came with steel wheels and wheel covers, with optional alloys, while the Z28 had them standard. Instrumentation had yellow lettering, while the window and climate controls were gray.

The base tires were the Eagle GA with an S speed-rating. Any cars with these tires included a 105 mph speed limiter. The base coupes only came with the GA, but the V8 cars could be ordered with the Eagle GS-C (QLC) Z-rated high performance tire, which did away with the speed limiter entirely.

The Firebird had standard alloys that were different from the twisty-type on the Formula and Trans Am. Very few 1993 cars were made with T-Tops.

Exterior colors available: Arctic White, Bright Red, Black, Bright Teal, Polo Green, Dark Gray-Green Metallic, Purple Pearl Metallic, Medium Patriot Red, Medium Quasar Blue, Yellow (Only 196 made, Pontiac only).

Interior colors were Light Gray, Graphite and Tan. Cloth only.

1994

Trans Am and Trans Am GT models differentiated by raised spoiler on GT model.

25th Anniversary Trans Am came in white with single blue center stripe, white 5-spoke wheels and a white leather interior.

Instrumentation was changed in the Camaros to white, and the window and climate controls became black.

The T56 6-speed transmission was revised with new gear ratios and also introduced CAGS, the skip-shift feature. The only axle ratio available with the 6-speed was now a 3.42.

The 4L60 transmission was replaced by the 4L60-E electronic unit.

Exterior colors: Yellow (Only 304 made, Pontiac only) dropped at midyear.

Interior colors were Light Gray, Graphite, Tan, and Flame Red (Cloth only).

Leather interior introduced late in the year, in graphite or tan.

1995

Trans Am GT merged back into Trans Am, and raised spoiler now an option.

The L36 3.8 V6 was introduced midyear, and was only available in California. V8 cars in California received dual catalytic converters, good for an additional 10 hp. Base Eagle GA tires were upgraded from S-rated to T-rated, and therefore the speed limiter that was included on cars with these tires was raised from 105 mph to 115 mph.

The Eagle RSA (QFZ) all-season Z-rated tire was introduced and available on the V8 cars, in addition to the Eagle GS-C (QLC) high-performance Z-rated tire.

The black roof and mirrors on the V8 Camaros could now be ordered in body color for no additional charge.

New 5-spoke wheels introduced on the Pontiacs, including the base coupe.

Traction control now available on V8 cars.

Exterior colors: Dark Gray-Green Metallic and Purple Pearl metallic dropped. Mystic Teal, Sebring Silver and Dark Purple Metallic introduced.

Leather interior available in Graphite and Tan.

1996

Camaro SS, Formula WS6 and Trans Am WS6 introduced, built by SLP under contract to GM. All three cars rated at 305 hp, compared to 285 hp of other models. All featured trick "ram-air" hood scoops. All came with 17" wheels and 275/40-17 tires, plus the 1LE suspension, except with DeCarbon shocks using different valving from the stock shocks. A total of 2,575 WS6 cars were made in 1996, out of a total of 30,937 Firebirds.

Camaro RS and Firebird GT were introduced. It was basically a Camaro or Firebird base coupe with a ground effects package.

The Y87 Performance Package was available on Camaro Coupe, RS, and Firebird, which consisted of four wheel disc brakes, 3.42 axle ratio and the sportier suspension components that the V8 cars received.

New interior cloth in the Camaros was the only significant trim change. The L36 3.8 V6 became standard in all base coupes, and dual catalytic converters were included on all V8 cars, good for another 10 hp, for a total fo 285.

Air Conditioning made standard on all V8 cars.

1LE performance suspension package on Camaro now includes Koni double-adjustable shock absorbers.

Factory chromed wheels now available.

Exterior Colors: Medium Patriot Red dropped; Cayenne Red Metallic, Bright Green Metallic added.

Red leather interior now available.

1997

30th Anniversary Camaro marked by white car with Hugger Orange racing stripes, with white Houndstooth cloth interior, or optional white leather. Also included white 5-spoke wheels.

30,754 Firebirds were built in 1997, and of those, 3,804 were WS6 cars (2,827 Trans Ams, 473 Formulas, and 41 Formula convertibles).

New dash introduced on the Camaros, with instrument cluster suspiciously similar to the Pontiacs. New stereo head units and Monsoon sound system now available, replacing the previous Bose units.

New 5-spoke wheels and tri-color tailllights introduced on the Camaros.

Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) introduced on all f-bodies.

New "zebra stripe" cloth interior introduced, available in Light Gray, Graphite, Tan or Flame Red. Seats had "30th Anniversary" embroidered on headrest.

1998

The new all-aluminum LS1 V8 replaced the LT1 in the Z28, Formula and Trans Am makeing 305 hp. Camaro SS and Pontiac WS6 cars rated at 320 hp. Larger brakes (11.8" front/11.9" rear) all around on the V8 cars, and V6 cars with the Y87 Performance Package option. Includes dual piston front calipers and electronic rear brake force distribution.

All cars got makeovers. The Camaros received a new nose similar to that of a Celica or Eclipse, but no changes to the back of the car.

The Firebird coupe and Formula received a new nose with pop-up quad headlights and fog lights. Trans Am received same headlights, with different nose and fog lights. Taillights received honeycomb pattern. Slightly different wheels introduced on Formula and Trans Am initially, but disappeared later, replaced by the original 5-spoke wheel.

Camaro RS and Firebird GT dropped. Sport Appearance Package became available on Camaro Coupe, Z28 and SS.

1LE performance suspension package now available on Formula, but requires WS6 package.

Firehawk cancelled for 1998 due to safety certification problems (will return for 1999).
